The manufacturing process of upper limb prostheses

Prosthetics of the upper limbs is a stage of medical rehabilitation, the results of which determine the possibility of integration of the disabled person into modern society. The main factors affecting the effectiveness of rehabilitation are: the degree and cause of amputation, the anatomical and functional condition of the stump and the age of the patient.

Stages of prosthetics

The prosthetics technicians at RPOZ make upper limb prostheses: forearm prostheses and shoulder prostheses, which are made individually for each patient. Therefore, there are no two identical products, and the production process takes some time and involves several stages.

The first stage is the patient’s examination and selection of prosthetic components.

During the patient’s examination, abnormalities in the structure of the body and its segments are identified, the length and circumference of the limb are measured, and the amplitude of joint movements, muscle strength, and functions of the musculoskeletal system are determined.

The level and causes of amputation, defects and diseases of the truncated limb, concomitant diseases, body weight, and age are identified.
Based on the results of the examinations and individual consultations with the patient, the prosthesis design is determined and measurements are taken.

The second stage is the production of plaster negatives and positives

To make upper limb prostheses, receiving sleeves are made according to the plaster cast of the stump. The success of prosthetics directly depends on the reception sleeve compliance with the anatomical parameters of the truncated limb.

Using plaster bandages, a spatial impression – a negative, is removed from the stump, which is filled with plaster solution, and obtained – a positive, which is further processed by hand, taking into account the unloading of bone protrusions and free entry of the stump into the receiving sleeve. The positive is a sculptural likeness of the patient’s truncated limb.

The third stage is the production of the fitting sleeve

The fourth stage is the production of a permanent liner and cosmetic shell.

After the trial wear and refinement of the product, the prosthetics technicians proceed to the production of a permanent receiving sleeve and the construction of the final prosthesis scheme, taking into account all the nuances identified during the test stage, as well as anatomical, physiological, anthropometric, and biomechanical aspects.

When the receiving sleeve is ready, the final assembly of the product and its delivery to the patient take place. The cosmetic shell of the artificial arm can be either imitating the color of the natural limb, or any other color and with the application of graphics.

The complex of rehabilitation measures includes training in the use of a prosthesis and proper care of the product and the stump of a truncated limb.

Each case of amputation and, accordingly, each prosthetics process is unique. Therefore, the prosthetics technicians and rehabilitation specialists of our company apply an individual approach to each client in each individual case of prosthetics.
