Manufacture of lower limb prostheses

Loss of a leg or part of a leg is accompanied by serious functional impairments and, consequently, a loss of the ability to walk and perform self-care. The earlier prosthetics are started, the faster the patient will learn to walk on a prosthetic leg and the more natural their gait will be. The production of a prosthetic leg is a time-consuming and almost ювелирная work that requires the appropriate professionalism of prosthetic technicians. Whether the patient will use the prosthesis in the future depends on how well the prosthesis scheme is developed and how well the receiving sleeve is made. It is not enough to produce a prosthesis, it is necessary to teach the patient to walk on it, to cultivate new conditioned reflex connections, to develop a new dynamic stereotype of walking. For this purpose, a complex of rehabilitation measures is being developed, including physical therapy (physical therapy) and a prosthetic walking school.

Stages of prosthetics

The first stage is patient consultation and selection of components

During the patient’s examination, the cause of the amputation is identified, the patient’s general condition, concomitant diseases, disability group, as well as the patient’s everyday and professional activities, including the climatic conditions in their place of residence, are determined.
A thorough examination of the amputated limb is conducted, and the following is determined:

the level of truncation,
the shape of the stump (cylindrical, moderately or sharply pronounced conical,
club-shaped),
the condition of the soft tissues, the nature and location of the scars,
the condition of the bone sawdust,
the presence of local and phantom pains, and so on.

After all the necessary examinations, the design, parameters of the individual assembly scheme, and the method of product attachment are specified.

The second stage is removing the plaster cast.

The production of a plaster model requires special care and adherence to certain rules. A negative is created using plaster bandages, which is then filled with plaster solution. Once the plaster has hardened, the negative is removed and a positive is obtained. The resulting sculptural model is then refined by hand.

Третий этап – Изготовление первичной гильзы

The third stage is the manufacture of the primary sleeve

The fourth stage is the production of a permanent liner and cosmetic shell.

Based on the results of the trial wear of the prosthetic product and the observations of the prosthetic technician, the production of a permanent receiving sleeve and the technological completion of the prosthesis begin. To enhance comfort, the inner cavity of the receiving sleeve is supplemented with an insert made of elastic material.

To give the artificial limb an aesthetic appearance, a cosmetic shell is created. The color of the shell can mimic the natural color of the limb or be any other color based on the patient’s preferences. Additionally, we can create a receiving sleeve with a unique and vibrant design.

The fifth stage is the Prosthetic Walking School

The rehabilitation complex includes training in walking on a prosthesis, proper handling of the prosthesis in various everyday situations, as well as care for the product, covers, and stumps.

The rehabilitation complex is developed by a rehabilitation doctor and a prosthetics technician individually for each patient, which helps to avoid mistakes and learn the correct symmetrical gait, maintain good posture, and maintain body balance from the very first steps. Therapeutic exercises help to strengthen muscles, develop coordination, and improve motor dexterity.

Rehabilitation specialists will teach you how to properly care for your prosthesis, which will help to maintain its functionality and appearance. To prevent any unwanted reactions on the skin of the stump, it is important to keep all the internal and external parts of the prosthesis clean.

Each amputation case and, consequently, each prosthetics process is unique. Therefore, our company’s prosthetics technicians and rehabilitation specialists take a personalized approach to each client.
